Listen & Watch: Comedies!

The 2018 Cartoons-on-the-Radio Mash-up!  God Help the Queen!

It’s become a tradition at the WGTD Radio Theater over the last few years that the theme of the annual Cartoons-on the-Radio Mash-up revolves around a personality in the news. They have had shows focused on Kim Jong-Un, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump. In 2018, the WGTD Radio Theater featured shows about World War 2 and no one would be better to celebrate but the one current world leader who actually served during the war and the longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

Rocky and Bullwinkle will be hosting her in Frostbite Falls in spite of the antics of Boris and Natasha. Dudley Do-Right will be patrolling the far reaches of the queen’s Dominion of Canada as she plans to visit to Quebec. Yogi Bear thinks her purse might have something better in it than the usual pic-a-nic baskets. Bugs Bunny, well, he’s eating carrots right out the Queen’s garden and it’s Elmer Fudd’s job to stop him.

The 2016 Cartoons-on-the-Radio Mash-up! We're PUTIN on a Show!

For the 2015 annual “Cartoon Shows on the Radio,” the writing team of Steve Brown and Mike Ullstrup took on North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un.  For 2016, they bump it up ten notches!

In this show, Brown and Ullstrup turn their sights on the “ever so evil” Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin.  And yes, he will be riding his horse shirtless, even in the dead of winter up in Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, and up in the cold tundra of Canada, while he is being tracked down by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The cartoons that are showcased are: “Rocky and Bullwinkle,” “Yogi Bear,” “Mr. Peabody and Sherman,” “Snagglepuss,” “Dudley DoRight,” and “Foghorn Leghorn.”  President Putin will be trying to build a Ritz Hotel in each of the episodes which blends perfectly into the overall theme of...“PUTIN on the RITZ!”

The 2015 Cartoons-on-the-Radio Mash-up! Yes, We're Going There!

Yes, the WGTD Radio Theater is going there!  The big event in December, 2014 was the blatant attack by the evil communists of North Korea on that most beloved of American industries -- movies!  To support our artistic brothers and sisters in the film industry, the WGTD Radio Theater and the 91.1 Players launch their own counter-attack on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! Kim Jong-Un -- you are toast!  Can Rocky and Bullwinkle thwart Boris and Natasha's plan to deliver a top secret mineral to North Korea?  Can Mr. Peabody and Sherman stop North Korea from conquering the entire Eastern Hemisphere -- on a technicality? Can it be that Kim Jong-Un is stealing pic-a-nic baskets?  That's Yogi Bear's job!  Can Dudley Do-Right stop that dastardly Snidely Whiplash from helping the North Koreans invade fair Canada?  The fiend!  Can Auggie Doggie and Doggie Daddy free captive canines from their fate in North Korea? Do your patriotic duty and listen to this show!

A Tribute to Mary Tyler Moore!  Turning the World On with HER Smile!  (Broadcast Date: June 24, 2017)

Mary Tyler Moore is best known for her television roles as “Laura Petrie” on the 1960’s sit-com, “The Dick Van Dyck Show,” and then in the 1970’s on her very own “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” where she played Mary Richards, associate television news producer of that fictitious Minneapolis TV Station, WJM. The June 24, 2017 live broadcast featured brand new scripts in a “mash-up” of both “The Dick Van Dyck Show” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” with a very interesting “twist” at the end of the show. Also returning to our WGTD Radio Theater broadcast line-up for this show is “It’s the Professor” with our usual cast of funny and off-the wall retirees living down in Florida at Boca del Rio, Phase 3.

"Summer's Over: A Summer Comedy Classics Trio!”  (August 15, 2015)
Radio / Comedy

The WGTD Radio Theater showcases the 91.1 Players in “A Summer Comedy Classics Trio.”  Featured will be newly written episodes of “The New Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” “The Great Gildersleeve,” and “Our MAugust iss Brooks” all written by Steven Brown and Michael Ullstrup, co-Executive Producers and creators of The WGTD Radio Theater.

As summer winds down, this is the perfect time to crank up the comedy and let the stars from the 91.1 Players re-create three of old time radio’s “best of the best” comedies.  In “The New Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” Ozzie and the boys (David and Ricky) are getting ready for the fall by cleaning out the garage, harvesting the garden, and driving Harriet absolutely crazy!

“The Great Gildersleeve,” was the first “spin-off” series whose character started on the famous and most popular “Fibber McGee and Molly Show.”  In this brand new “Gildersleeve” episode, Gildy is called on to help his nephew, Leroy, write a speech for his class at school. In addition, the governor of Gildy’s state needs his help to prepare for the potential problems of a polar vortex.

The last of the big three comedies in this August broadcast is “Our Miss Brooks.”  As Constance Brooks enjoys one of her last days of summer vacation, it seems that school has already started, and she finds that her talents as an English teacher are sorely needed.

As always, actors from the WGTD Radio Theater’s 91.1 Players star in this trio of well known old time radio comedies.  They include Julie Burton, Rene Bushelle, Siegfried Christoph, Arthur Dexter, Viki DuMez, Alexa Eaves, Todd Eaves, Brett Houdek, Gary Lien, Susan Lien and Jim McClure.  Live sound effects will be artfully created by Barbara Tylla, who is also the show’s director.

The Executive Producers and co-founders of The WGTD Radio Theater are Steve Brown and Michael Ullstrup.

The WGTD Radio Theater presents "Back to School!"  (August 24, 2013)
Radio / Comedy

It’s that time of year – back to school!  And the seven-time award-winning WGTD Radio Theater presents three episodes of classic shows “celebrating” the annual event!

First up will be “Our Miss Brooks!”.  Principal Conklin is paying close attention to the standardized test scores, Walter Denton is paying close attention to the AV equipment, and Connie Brooks is paying very close attention to Mr. Boynton!  Carolyn Recker stars as Miss Brooks, John O’Leksy as Mr. Conklin, and Alex Campea as Walter.

Then, Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and the gang start another year at Riverdale High School in “The Adventures of Archie Andrews”.  Just who will Archie ask to the dance?  Betty and Veronica want to know!  Cameron Spencer stars as Archie.

And, in “It’s the Professor!”, Bernice goes to night school – and just who is that nice young man, Owen?  Siegfried Christoph is the Professor and Susan Lien is Bernice.

Other stars are Gary Stamm, Terry Meyers, Julie Burton, Naomi Waisman-Zabler, and Todd Eaves.

Said writer and producer, Steve Brown, “We’re also adding a lot of great classic 50’s style music into the show. Doo-wop has become a popular feature on WGTD-HD3 and we thought we’d add it to the Radio Theater.”
